FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
It is HearthStone’s mission to help you and your family answer questions like these:
What kind of support services exist, and how do we access them?
HearthStone provides assessment and referral services to help you and your family find your way to the kind of services that may exist in the community. HearthStone offers Mentor Families who have had experience and community networking to help you find your way through the maze of "red tape" that often is confusing and discouraging.
How can we plan for the future when we're busy coping with today?
HearthStone offers families an opportunity to step back from the "daily grind" and begin to plan for the future in a positive and possible way. Several of our members are trained facilitators in PATH Planning. PATH (Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope) is a process that can help you take the important first steps toward better tomorrows by designing an individualized support group that is focused on helping, supporting and advocating for adults with disabilities. This service is offered free to HearthStone member families.
What about finding friends and having some fun?
Sometimes finding friends can be pretty tough. . . . for anyone! HearthStone believes it is essential to develop natural, mutual friendships. Our organization and its family members plan regular, supervised recreational events designed to promote interaction between member families and individuals in the community. In addition, there is a HearthStone initiative to promote one-on-one facilitated friendships, not unlike organizations such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
What about independent living in an apartment, condo or home?
Many of our HearthStone members have successfully made the transition to independent living. At first filled with uncertainty, families found that the support, encouragement and resources facilitated by HearthStone helped their adult children make the move to independence. Financial support in the form of down payment assistance, low-interest WHEDA loans and other resources even enabled some members to purchase their own homes or condominiums.
How do I get the best care. . . . forever?
There are a million questions that need answers in order to help support the individual needs of our family members with disabilities. HearthStone's commitment to education is an important component in our mission. HearthStone's Educational initiative includes quarterly educational meetings which feature resource speakers, forums or panels dedicated to exploring issues which may be of value to members and the general public as they relate to persons with disabilities.
Can we really get help from people outside of our family?
Yes, it's often surprising, maybe even amazing, but there are a lot of people out there who are willing to help. Not to do it for you, but with you. We have been blessed with professional volunteers--doctors, lawyers, CPAs, etc. and lots of people who are just plain good folks ready to help out with a ride to the grocery store or a friendly "hello".
How much does it cost to belong to HearthStone?
Nothing. Our dues are do's. No need to bring your checkbook. Bring your time, your talent, your commitment, your energy, and enthusiasm. Donations are deductible and are always gratefully accepted, but the value of your membership in HearthStone is based on what you make of it, not what you pay for it.
